A burrito should look like this:
See how it would be possible to hold and eat it with one hand? See how it stands up all by itself? How it's not just a tortilla draped over rice and beans and served on a plate with a knife and fork?
New York, are you listening?
I love you, but your burritos are a disaster. Don't even get me started on your pellet-like, oddly yellow rice, the mushy salsa, the bland, tough meats or worst of all, the oversalted, undercooked beans.
I tried more times than I should have to find a decent burrito in New York City. I came very close when Dos Toros opened up near Union Square, but even then, it was agonizing to watch the lackadaisical pace at which the burritos are assembled. Go to Pancho Villa in the Mission in San Francisco, and you're waiting a long time if your burrito takes more than fourteen seconds to prepare. In New York, you have time to re-watch the first season of "Mad Men" while your lunch is rolled together.
I could go on and on about the sad state of burritos in New York, and I often do. But I'll stop now.
For now, anyway.
Let's just look at that burrito again, a little more close up:
I won't say that this chorizo and potato burrito from Picante in Berkeley is the best burrito in all the world, but you sure as hell can't knock its structure. And, to be sure, it was delicious.
This concludes my burrito announcement/tirade.
Until the next one, anyway.

Oh my gosh! I kept thinking this has got to be a Picante burrito the whole time I read your post. Brilliant! Their burritos and enchiladas verdes, oh how I salivate for them. And the guac, don't even get me started!
For the love of Epizote please let a decent burrito come to Boston.
Dear Lord Man...the potato and chorizo burrito is one of my favorites from Picante. Our office just moved from Berkeley to Oakland...and I have yet to find anything comparable over here...especially within walking distance. The thought of giving up my parking spot, and relying on the parking gods to ever allow me another after lunch...is too frightening to even contemplate. So alas I ate at Subway 2x last week...Ugh.
welcome home, vanessa!
al, alex and i will be sure to try picante when next we are on the other side of the bay. if you happen across our way, try the al pastor super burrito at el farolito on grand ave in ssf. it is huge, but you should (will) refrain from sharing. trust me.
